DECISION – June 18, 2026

Today the Board of Trustees decided to open the new Airdrie school located in South Windsong as a Kindergarten – Grade 8 school in the fall of 2027, growing to Kindergarten – Grade 9 in 2028/29.

The perspectives of parents/guardians, students, employees and community members were extremely valuable in helping the Board to make this important decision and we are grateful to all who participated. See the letter to Airdrie RVS families for more information.

The Board believes this decision is the best option to populate the school while balancing utilizations at existing area schools.

Summary

  • The communities of South Windsong and Southwinds are designated to the new school beginning September 2027. Students in these neighbourhoods in Grade 9 in 2027/28 will continue to attend their current designated schools (Windsong Heights School, Northcott Prairie School or Herons Crossing School).
  • Chinook Gate is designated to Windsong Heights School beginning September 2027. For the 2027/28 school year only, students in Chinook Gate who are in Grade 9 will be given a choice of attending their newly designated school of Windsong Heights School or staying at Herons Crossing School.
  • Cobblestone Creek is designated to Northcott Prairie School beginning September 2027. For the 2027/28 school year only, students in Cobblestone Creek who are in Grade 9 will be given a choice of attending their newly designated school of Northcott Prairie or staying at École Airdrie Middle School.
  • No other neighbourhoods are impacted by today’s decision.
  • French Immersion and Christian programming school designations remain.

The new Kindergarten to Grade 9 (K-9) school in South Windsong is anticipated to open in September 2027. With a capacity of 905 students, the new school will be a welcome addition to help relieve space pressures in Airdrie.

The South Windsong K-9 is one of three new school projects in Airdrie funded for construction. A new K-9 school is also expected to break ground soon in Bayview, along with a high school in Southwinds.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for establishing school attendance areas and designating resident students of the Board to a particular school (Board Policy 23). Each new school will require an attendance area to be established and boundary approved by the Board. In addition, attendance area adjustments to other affected schools will require Board approval at the same time.

This is done using a collaborative process of community engagement (Board Policy 25) in alignment with AP 171 – Student Accommodation Consultation.

Several communities may benefit from the opening of this school (South Windsong, Southwinds, Chinook Gate and Cobblestone Creek) while some schools may experience some reduction in enrolment and utilization (Windsong Heights, Northcott Prairie, Herons Crossing, École Edwards, École Airdrie Middle). To view potential changes under each option to South Windsong, Southwinds, Chinook Gate and Cobblestone Creek, please visit our interactive map.

The online survey closed on May 5; to read a summary of the feedback received through the engagement, see What We Heard.
